Scotland at the FISTF World Cup 2015

world-cup-2015-logoWhen the Subbuteo World Cup was held in Manchester in 2012, Scotland were represented by a squad of 12 players. Unfortunately there was no Scottish representation in the following 2 years but we are pleased to say that this year at San Benedetto del Tronto in Italy, Scotland will once again take part.

Dave Allen was a member of the 2012 squad and played in the Open Team Event but in fact first played in the World Cup in 1994 at Under-20 level. He plays for Manchester Table Football Club and he will be in the Open category at the World Cup.

Also in the Open category will be Mike Burns. Mike missed out on the Manchester tournament but has played in previous World Cups (his first at Under-16 level in 1998) and so is pleased to be back representing his country. He plays for the Italian club ACS Perugia and so carries with him the valuable experience of playing in that country.

I am hoping to get out my group at least in the individual and team event. The ideal situation for me is to get a top top player for the experience and another 2 beatable players in the group.  Ideally I’d be looking to get either Juan Noguera or Daniele Bertelli. I’ve played a lot of the top players in the world but yet to face either of them. For the team event I’d be hoping Scotland can again get one of the top teams, Italy or Spain but then avoid the likes of Portugal, Greece or Belgium. We’ll be very lucky if we can avoid a group of death. – Mike Burns

The third player in the Open category is Dave Skinner. Dave has only recently registered as an STFA member and as yet is unattached to a club. He will be well supported, however, by his more experienced colleagues.

Playing in the Veteran category will be Dave Baxter. He has been resident in Canada but is registered alongside Mike Burns with ACS Perugia. Dave brings with him a wealth of international experience over many years and so is no stranger to this level of competition. A highly valued member of the team, we look forward to him being more involved in the Scottish game when he returns to live in Scotland.

Joining Dave Baxter in the Veteran category will be Malcolm Lees and like Dave he is a very experienced Scottish international. He was also in the 2012 squad in Manchester competing in both the Individual Veteran category and the Veteran Team Event. Back in the 70s and 80s when he ran the Livingston club he dominated Scottish Subbuteo. Malcolm has recently joined Glasgow Table Soccer Association. Malcolm told STFA that he is looking forward to a great experience and hopes to be competitive in all his matches.

Malcolm Lees - Manchester World Cup 2012

All the players will form the Scottish team in the Open category Team Event. The STFA wishes the squad the very best of luck when they take to the green tables over the weekend of 12/13 September.

Malcolm Lees was the only squad player who took part in the Scottish Circuit during season 2014/15 who put his name forward to play in the World Cup. (Andy Beskaby had initially expressed interest but later withdrew). But the STFA Board were keen that there should be greater Scottish representation and were therefore instrumental in allowing STFA members, who hadn’t played in the Circuit, the opportunity to play in the World Cup.

The squad has a strong east of Scotland flavour with 4 players being former members of Hot Club d’Ecosse. Regrettably this once great club is not currently involved in the national or international Subbuteo scene.
